Simple Sunday

girlgullcot

I just bought this photo yesterday at Gull Cottage Antiques in Applegate (love it there!). I could tell this cute little girl is holding something. But what? Can you tell?
Jim and I had some thoughts, but I’d love to hear what YOU think!

  1. I think she has a bouquet of paper flowers. It was a standard convention in portraiture (going back centuries) to indicate a person’s status or occupation and with children certain props also indicated boy or girl when the portrait was a very small child since boys wrote dresses too until they were out of diapers and fully “breeched.” Flowers were commonly for girls, small toy hammers and other tools for boys. Sometimes the baby boy would hold a book to indicate his father’s education (such as a lawyer) or tiny tools of his father’s trade, especially if he was the oldest boy, who was assumed to take over his father’s occupation in future. Older children held books to indicate their own education, current or pending.
I’m going to stop babbling now!

  2. Every thought I read (here and on facebook), I totally saw that thing in the picture! I’m glad when everyone chimes in and we can get some ideas. Jim thought it was a doll facing down, but I when I saw it enlarged on the computer, I could see that what he thought was part of the doll was actually the girl’s dress. 🙂

I would love to hear what you think!
